Mauritania announces €911 million in port funding for Nouadhibou
The government of Mauritania has put forward an ambitious public plan, including what it says will be U.S. backing, to radically transform the industrial infrastructure of its economic capital. Presented to the Council of Ministers, the Wilaya of Dakhlet Nouadhibou Development Programme for the 2026 to 2029 period includes a total financial allocation of €911 million (equivalent to 39.640 billion ouguiyas). Of this total amount, a strategic €585 million allocation (equivalent to 25.440 billion MRU) will be earmarked exclusively for the construction of critical infrastructure designed to support key productive sectors in the country’s northern region.
A new deep-water port at the core
The central pillar of this public push is the construction of a new deep-water port. The future maritime facility has been designed as a multi-purpose, versatile hub capable of accommodating commercial and industrial vessels with deep draft. With this project, Mauritania aims to dramatically expand Nouadhibou’s logistics capacity, optimize export chains and boost growth in commercial activity along the Atlantic, linking fishing traffic more efficiently with international markets.
Industrial wastewater treatment for the fisheries sector
The fishing industry, the real financial engine of Mauritania’s coastline, will receive the technical support needed to adapt to modern environmental standards. The executive program includes building an industrial wastewater treatment plant linked to the fish processing chain. The facility is expected to have a processing capacity of 21,630 cubic meters per day, with the goal of mitigating the discharge of industrial waste, curbing pollution in the marine ecosystem, and preserving the city’s seafront.
Execution depends on engineering studies and financing
Both interventions are the largest-scale economic measures within the package of investments planned for the Dakhlet Nouadhibou region. Despite approval of the budget framework by the Council of Ministers, the actual implementation of the works remains contingent on the completion of the relevant technical engineering studies, the final securing of the required international financing, and the awarding of the tender contracts.
