Fred. Olsen S.A. has restructured its boardroom leadership by appointing Bart Frits Koops as the new vice president of the company. The corporate move places Koops in the second tier of governance at the shipping group.

The change in the vice presidency is part of a broader reorganization of the group’s subsidiaries and equity instruments in the archipelago. In 2019, Koops took on joint management of companies linked to the entity’s equity structure, such as Quise S.A., replacing Gerardus Oudshoorn.

The board of directors of Fred. Olsen, a Bonheur subsidiary chaired by Gaute Gjelsten (pictured), names Almar Holtz as president, who also serves as a board member of the trading company. The corporate governance body is completed by a panel of directors comprising Theodorus Laurentius Gerardus Heemskerk, Bart Frits Koops and Olav Alexander Nergaard, thereby shaping the executive leadership of the shipping company following its most recent corporate restructurings. The company secretary is Andrés Marín.

Koops’ appointment coincides with a period of major strategic decisions for Fred. Olsen Express in the Canary Islands market. The carrier, which has been operating inter-island routes for more than half a century, faces a landscape shaped by the break-up of the alliance it had maintained to connect with the Peninsula (Huelva) and the entry of Baleària as a direct competitor after it bought Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea.

From the fleet management, led by Juan Ignacio Liaño, the company told Atlantico Hoy that it will stick to a business plan focused on on-time performance, service reliability and passenger experience, playing down the competitive tension in inter-island and mainland routes. With the new vice presidency confirmed, the group’s short- and medium-term roadmap in the Canaries has two priority areas: the development and consolidation of its new terminal at Las Palmas Port, a key investment to optimize passenger and cargo operations in the Gran Canaria capital.

On decarbonisation, the company advocates a pragmatic approach to high-speed maritime transport in the archipelago, ruling out for the time being options such as a 100% electric vessel, which it considers technologically unfeasible for the scale and demands of its current routes. With Koops taking the vice presidency, Fred. Olsen aims to strengthen its institutional and operational leadership position in the Atlantic, backed by a reinforced corporate structure to deal with the dynamics of the commercial nautical sector in the coming years.
