The commissioning of the Hidramar Ultra 22000 floating dock at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Wednesday highlighted a fact that did not go unnoticed: the PSOE’s support for an investment backed by the Spanish state and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), which, together with the private sector, totals €40.7 million. As the project addresses a historic strategic shortfall in the Mid-Atlantic, the PSOE publicly demonstrated its unwavering support for the launch of the infrastructure. Workers welcomed the Socialist leaders with applause before senior Canary Islands PSOE officials held a private meeting with them.
The institutional and party delegation was led by the Government’s delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, and by the PSOE spokesman on the Tenerife Island Council and member of the port’s board of directors, Aarón Afonso. They were accompanied by Socialist representatives from the city council of the island’s capital and from the Island Council. The party’s presence on the island was rounded out by party officials including Manuel Hernández, Andrés Martín, Mónica Brito and Antonio Rodríguez, as well as former Port Authority president Carlos González, a key figure during the previous legislative term in securing the guarantee that the project would be carried out before the Socialists lost regional power.
