The map of Spain’s fishing industry is being reshaped from the ground up. The group led by Enrique García Chillón, the national sector leader by revenue, is moving ahead with its structural overhaul after acquiring the entirety of Unión Martín from Alantra. The company, headquartered in Las Palmas, specialises in the capture, processing and marketing of seafood products. The deal enables the Galician giant to integrate two new industrial plants in Gran Canaria and Valencia, adding around €150 million to its revenue. The new operational phase is being placed under the direct management of Enrique Bernardo García Chillón and Lino Blanco Estévez, who will serve as joint and several administrators of the entity.
The transaction represents a radical change in the management structure of the Canary Islands-based company. According to financial sources, Unión Martín has carried out a complete restructuring of its governing body, moving from a collegiate board to a structure led by joint and several administrators. The move formalises the departure from the company’s board of entities including Partilonia Administración, Paulonia Servicios de Gestión, Alantra Private Equity Servicios, Mideslonia Administración and Meracris. Juan Lorenzo de Navascués Benlloch and Fernando Ortega Izquierdo have also stepped down from their executive responsibilities. At the top of the company, Meracris is leaving the chairmanship, while Fernando Ortega Izquierdo is stepping down as secretary of the governing body.
Strengthening ties with Mercadona
The industrial impact of the acquisition covers both the operational facilities at the port of Las Palmas and the Silomar plant in Valencia, a company acquired by Unión Martín in 2022. The Valencian complex provides 19,000 square metres of industrial space equipped with processing infrastructure and cold-storage facilities. The two companies share close commercial ties as suppliers to supermarket chain Mercadona. The integration strengthens Profand’s supply capacity within the distribution group’s network, chaired by Juan Roig.
Profand closed the past financial year with revenue of €1.116 billion and net profit of €30 million, figures that consolidate its position ahead of historic competitors such as Nueva Pescanova. The incorporation of Unión Martín’s fishing and processing capacity puts the seafood company’s annual revenue above €1.25 billion.
Betting on the Canary Islands hub
Profand’s leadership frames the acquisition as part of its expansion strategy in the archipelago, which management has described as a “strategic” market for promoting the industrialisation of fish processing. The multinational’s chairman, Enrique García Chillón, places the move within the company’s aim of maintaining orderly growth by strengthening its industrial capacity and geographical presence. The incorporation of the Gran Canaria-based structure seeks to build a benchmark project in the fishing industry backed by long-term investment.
