The advantages of the Canary Islands Economic and Tax Regime (REF) have moved from theory on paper to on-the-ground inspection. As part of the second outreach conference organized by the Tenerife Island Council’s Foreign Action Department, a diplomatic and consular delegation completed a technical tour of the island’s main economic infrastructures.
The itinerary included the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Technological Institute of Renewable Energies (ITER) and the Tenerife Science and Technology Park (INtech). The initiative seeks to position the island as a business and investment platform in the Atlantic, combining the tax incentives of the Canary Islands regime with established industrial and technological capabilities.
Diplomacy and key infrastructure
The visit to the port facility was attended by Silvana Lorena Balaguer Mira, Uruguay’s consul general in the Canary Islands, together with Pedro Ángel González Delgado, the Tenerife Island Council’s director of Foreign Action and Strategic Projects. The delegation included executives from the Science and Technology Park, such as Yaiza Arteaga and Natalia Comin, as well as representatives of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Chamber of Commerce.
Luz Marina Espiau Moreno, the Port Authority’s director of commercial and business development, presented data on port activity and the role of the facilities in the archipelago’s external connectivity. The INtech team outlined opportunities for companies to establish operations in its technological and industrial areas.
International promotion of the Canary Islands regime
Held in September, the conference forms part of a strategy to strengthen institutional ties and publicize the benefits of the Canary Islands regime abroad. The combination of low taxation, operational port facilities and research centers seeks to attract high-value-added business projects. The meeting made it possible to share assessments of the island’s strategic assets and lay the groundwork for future economic promotion partnerships with the countries represented in the delegation.
