The central government has restarted the development of port infrastructure in the south of Tenerife.
The Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, authorised the tendering of works to close and equip the Ribera quay at the Port of Granadilla. The file includes a budget allocation of €53.9 million, excluding IGIC, assigned to the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority.
The move responds to the need to unblock a strategic project
The Ministry’s action reflects the need to unblock a strategic project that has been halted in public procurement markets. The current tender includes an upward revision of the contract’s initial estimated value. The earlier procedure was declared void on 27 April 2026 due to the complete absence of bidders, which forced authorities to readjust the economic conditions to absorb the increase in construction costs for shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure.
Granadilla represents the last new-build port
The Granadilla facility is the last new-build port constructed within Spain’s system of ports of general interest. Its operations were designed to act in a complementary way to the Santa Cruz de Tenerife basin, strengthening the island’s overall logistics capacity. The infrastructure has drafts suited to large vessels and connects directly to an adjacent high-area industrial zone, consolidating a key transport hub for Atlantic commercial routes.
The authorised project includes 543.3 metres of works
The authorised project involves carrying out the 543.3 metres of length required to complete the full alignment of 1,045 metres that will form the Ribera quay. The section still to be built is located between the second stretch of the multipurpose quay and the concessioned area of the final section in the southern sector. The designed technical solution requires the seating of 11 reinforced-concrete caissons, each with dimensions of 48.25 metres in length, founded at a level of -18 metres, alongside submerged concrete closures of 5.78 metres in length.
Financing through the 2025-2029 investment plan and EU funds
The projects are included in the 2025-2029 Investment Plan of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority, under a specific heading dedicated to the southern port. The work benefits from co-financing from the European Union using resources from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the 2021-2027 framework.
Over €250 million earmarked for Tenerife’s basins
The State’s Ports planning assigns more than €250 million to Tenerife’s docks for the 2025-2029 five-year period. Of this allocation, €175 million corresponds to capacity-expansion and demand-adaptation works. The strategy sets aside €47.5 million for decarbonisation and environmental sustainability projects, reserving a little over €20 million for port-city integration interventions.
