Boluda Maritime Terminals (BMT) has officially kicked off a new phase of operational expansion at the Port of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.
The port terminal has begun its first operations focused on international transshipment of cargo, with the call of the container ship HMM Green.
The infrastructure supports the unloading and movement of an initial batch of 1,200 containers
in a planned maneuver over four consecutive working days. The logistics schedule calls for the vessel to complete the discharge before setting back to sea to continue its ocean route to Algeciras.
The strategic shift
by the subsidiary of the Boluda shipping group toward the international transshipment segment required a rapid adaptation of its mechanical capabilities and yard infrastructure. To handle the volume of movements and ensure smooth container handling, BMT acquired four rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTG) from Operaciones Portuarias Canarias (OPCSA). The transfer and installation of this heavy machinery was coordinated using the deployment of a specialized barge that brought two cranes to Tenerife and carried out the transfer of another unit destined for the Port of La Palma.
The container ship tasked with launching these transshipment operations, HMM Green,
is the latest generation of merchant vessels for large tonnage. In service since 2025 and registered under the flag of Panama, the vessel has a cargo capacity of 8,548 TEU. Its dimensions reach 100,902 deadweight tons and 274 meters in length overall, and it is equipped with a dual-engine propulsion plant designed for the consumption of methanol as an alternative fuel.
Boluda Maritime Terminals’ capture of international traffic
strengthens the Port of Las Palmas’ position as a major logistics hub in the Central Atlantic. The combination of investments in machinery, labor agreements, and the arrival of ships with sustainable technologies boosts the visibility of the Canarian port within global supply chains.
