€45.3 million to expand the Reina Sofía breakwater at Las Palmas Port
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has received clearance from the Council of Ministers to tender the construction of a berth attached to the southern Reina Sofía breakwater at Las Palmas Port. The project has a tender budget of €45.3 million, excluding the General Indirect Canarian Tax (IGIC), and will strengthen the operational capacity of the province’s main logistics hub.
The works include the addition of 335 metres of mooring line with an operational depth of 20 metres, along with 16,000 square metres of land for a yard. The infrastructure will be earmarked primarily for general cargo traffic and will be located at the southward extension of the current breakwater alignment. The Port Authority of Las Palmas includes the project in its 2025-2029 Investment Plan, under the chapter for expansion of the darsena, with the possibility of co-financing through EU funding.
The State Ports Investment Plan allocates more than €350 million to the Las Palmas facilities during 2025-2029. Within that allocation, €286 million is directed to infrastructure projects designed to expand capacity and meet the growth in maritime demand. The remainder of the investment framework distributes €41.5 million to environmental sustainability initiatives, almost €15 million to improving operational safety, €5.8 million to access connectivity, and €3.3 million to port-city integration projects.
The state-owned darsenas in the Canary Islands rank fifth nationally by public investment volume, accumulating more than €600 million under the strategic plan ‘Horizon 2030’ presented by the Transport ministry. The tender for the Reina Sofía breakwater reinforces Gran Canaria’s position as a key transshipment point and industrial operations hub on the mid-Atlantic maritime route.
