The energy services sector in the Atlantic has reached a new point of maturity with the formalization of the partnership between the Danish giant Semco Maritime and Zamakona Yards in the Canary Islands. The creation of the brand Astillero Las Palmas, announced on March 9, 2026, is not only an industrial cooperation operation; it is the consolidation of a one-stop shop designed to capture the critical demand for repair and maintenance of offshore assets in a geographic corridor connecting Europe with West Africa.
The investment thesis behind this joint venture is based on the complementarity of assets. Semco Maritime brings its engineering capability for the execution of complex projects—such as the upgrading of safety and automation systems—while Zamakona provides port infrastructure that would be prohibitive to replicate from scratch. The result is an operational center with 650 meters of continuous quay and depths of up to 22 meters, a technical depth necessary to service sixth-generation drilling platforms and the bulkiest support vessels in the sector.
The new plan comes with a competitive advantage in logistical scale. The facilities feature 15,000 square meters of outdoor storage and specialized workshops equipped with 50-ton overhead cranes. This heavy lifting capacity and availability of shore power enable the execution of life extension projects for platforms without the need to relocate the units to shipyards in Northern Europe, drastically reducing downtime and positioning fuel costs for shipowners.
Nikolaj Vejlgaard, Senior Vice President of Semco Maritime, has emphasized that operations are already underway, indicating a pre-existing order book or immediate latent demand in the Gran Canaria port. In a market where supply chain efficiency and proximity to the dock are critical, the integration of electrical, mechanical, and logistical services in a single node positions Las Palmas as the dominant technical hub against emerging competition from the African coast.
For the capital market and offshore operators, this alliance reduces operational risk in a high extractive activity area. By combining Danish execution discipline with Zamakona’s shipyard expertise, the new brand Astillero Las Palmas positions itself as the preferred partner for large-scale upgrades demanded by the energy transition and supply security in the Atlantic.
