In the naval industry, steel and diesel-electric propulsion often dominate the headlines, but it is in the offices of Santa Cruz de Tenerife where the financial viability necessary for these giants to touch the water is forged. Arcano Partners, through its Asset & Capital Finance division, has established itself as the invisible architect of the renewal of part of the Spanish fleet, using the Canary tax regime as the control board to mobilize millions in investments.
Recent notes from Santa Cruz de Tenerife reveal a frantic activity in the command structure of Economic Interest Groups (EIG), the preferred vehicle for naval tax lease. On February 19, the entities Naviera C-809 AIE and Naviera G-035 AIE formalized a strategic change: the departure of Luz María Valenciano Mesegar to make way for Alberto Caballero Palomino in power of attorney functions. These moves, far from being mere bureaucratic procedures, are the final touches on the management of financing structures that Arcano designs to connect private investors with the naval sector.
The most tangible example of this engineering is the ‘Arteaga NM’, the state-of-the-art freighter delivered by Astilleros de Murueta. This vessel, the 331st construction from the Biscayan shipyard, is a key piece in the MAAS pool (Murueta Atlántico Alcudia Shipping). Arcano has not only participated in its financing; it has validated a business model that bets on energy efficiency. With a diesel-electric propulsion system that optimizes consumption, the ‘Arteaga NM’ is the result of a symbiosis between Basque technical expertise and the financial sophistication of a firm that manages and advises over 13 billion euros.
Arcano’s role does not end with the champagne bottle smashing on the hull. The firm exercises rigorous control over the life cycle of these investments. A clear example is the transformation of Naviera Barayo V-138, which transitioned from EIG to Limited Company, a usual step when the financing structure has completed its tax cycle. In this process, Arcano Asset & Capital Finance and Arcano Corporate not only remain as joint administrators but also ensure the operational transition of assets that, as in this case, are valued in social capitals meticulously adjusted for the next phase of exploitation.
With a team of more than 260 professionals and a global presence, Arcano Partners has been able to read geopolitical and technological uncertainty to turn it into an investment opportunity in real assets. In the islands, its capacity to structure these operations has allowed projects like that of Naviera Murueta to be not only sustainable at sea but also in the balance sheets. The shipyards provide the muscle, Arcano provides the brain that allows the Spanish naval industry to continue navigating with a favorable fiscal tailwind.
