The Directorate of the Society for Maritime Salvage and Security (Sasemar) has completed the bidding process for the comprehensive maintenance of the main engines of its rescue vessels, a critical infrastructure for the operation of emergency services on the insular coast. The resolution, officially published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on May 20, 2026, awards all seven operational lots to the company Finanzauto, a historical strategic partner in the support of Caterpillar equipment. The operation, managed under the file EM26-913, ensures the technical availability of the 3412 engines, including the 3412 E and 3412 TA variants, guaranteeing that the response capacity to nautical emergencies maintains its reliability standards.
The contract has been awarded following an open procedure in which technical rigor was prioritized based on three fundamental criteria: preventive maintenance, which accounts for 50% of the total; corrective maintenance, at 35%; and the technical report, which represents the remaining 15%. The award, signed by director José Luis García Lena, reflects centralized and standardized management aimed at maximizing operational efficiency. The fact that Finanzauto was the only bid submitted for each of the seven lots—and that all bids received come from small and medium-sized enterprises or assimilated entities—highlights a technical specialization that limits the number of players capable of meeting the demands of Sasemar’s Caterpillar engine fleet.
The geographical distribution of the contract covers the entire national territory, reflecting the logistical complexity of Salvamento Marítimo’s deployment. Lot 5, which includes the Strait of Gibraltar, Ceuta, and Mazagón, along with Lot 6, which covers the entirety of the Canary archipelago, represent the most significant portions of the contract, with amounts of 134,000 and 205,000 euros respectively.
This formalization process, initiated with the announcement of the bid sent to the Official Journal of the European Union (DOUE) on February 16, 2026, underscores the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility’s commitment to safeguarding the operation of its rescue vessels against potential mechanical failures. The ‘comprehensive’ nature of the maintenance stipulated in the tender implies that Finanzauto will not only handle urgent or corrective repairs but also a rigorous preventive planning. This maintenance strategy is vital since Sasemar’s fleet is, in many scenarios, the sole rapid response resource for maritime incidents in Spanish territorial waters of the Canary Islands.
Finanzauto reaffirms itself as the sole provider capable of delivering the service required by the Sasemar Directorate, consolidating a market share in the public defense and security sector that is difficult to replicate. The modernization of the Spanish maritime and port sector is not limited to new shipbuilding; rather, as this award shows, it critically depends on preventive maintenance. Sasemar’s forecast of having its 3412 engines’ needs covered for the coming years guarantees that the investment effort in infrastructure will be profitable. With these services standardized under a single technical firm, the publicly controlled entity ensures that the coordination of its resources across the seven territorial demarcations is consistent and predictable. The professionalization of this area is ultimately a fundamental piece of the machinery that maintains the safety of nearly 8,000 kilometers of Spanish coastline.
