Puertos Canarios reactivates outreach for the fishing sector in Las Palmas
The regional body brought together the captains from all eight islands at the fishing dock in Las Palmas, as part of the citizen-opening project promoted by Ecopuertos Inteligentes. This Tuesday, the San Cristóbal fishing port in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria became the regional focal point for maritime outreach with the Jornada de Puertos Abiertos (Open Ports Day). The initiative, driven jointly by Ecopuertos Inteligentes, Turismo Marinero San Cristóbal and the entity Pescatobal, set out a technical and cultural agenda aimed at highlighting local fishing activity, preserving the sea’s heritage, and showcasing the traditional trades linked to the island coastline.
The meeting also featured a significant institutional technical component, gathering in the capital port area the full roster of officers from the public entity Puertos Canarios across the eight islands. The presence of the operating staff from the regional network sought to harmonise management criteria and exchange good practices on sustainability, the digitalisation of fishing infrastructure, and the integration of the port domain into the urban fabric of the coastal municipalities of the Canary Islands.
The event programme combined training and product analysis activities with hands-on workshops on the freshness and quality of the catches, along with seminars devoted to the sea’s traditional trades. It also included immersive multisensory experiences for attendees, tours of the heritage assets of the fishing district, outreach theatrical performances promoted by the regional public entity, and demonstrations of gastronomic innovation geared toward the consumption of zero-kilometre fish.
José Gilberto Moreno, managing director of Puertos Canarios, framed the day within the strategy to highlight the public and industrial heritage of the regional facilities. In his assessment, the organisation’s management said that fishing quays should go beyond being mere infrastructure nodes, so they can become hubs for regional economic dynamism, cultural identity, and the development of activities linked to the blue economy across the Archipelago.
