the sale of Alantra

The map of the national fishing industry has undergone a structural alteration with the recent acquisition of Unión Martín, the fishing conglomerate based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, by the Galician multinational Profand Fishing Holding. This operation, formally consolidated on June 2, 2026, not only transfers the command of a reference in the cephalopod market but also symbolizes the final phase of a sectoral concentration process led by Profand under the leadership of Enrique García Chillón. The transaction, the amount of which remains confidential, marks a turning point in the vertical integration strategy of the Galician giant, the main supplier of seafood products for Mercadona.
The corporate takeover has been reflected in the commercial registers with a profound change in the executive leadership. The resolution reflects a comprehensive organic restructuring: the dismissals of Juan Lorenzo de Navascués Benlloch and José Lorenzo Noda Martín as directors of the company, with the latter also resigning from his position as president, have been formalized. Additionally, the revocation of the joint and several powers held by José Lorenzo Noda Martín has been recorded, removing any trace of the previous management from the representation capacities.
The new phase is articulated under the presidency of the company Meracris SL, which has appointed Pablo José Gómez Pablos Calvo as its legal representative to exercise the functions of president at Unión Martín SL. The administration body is completed with the appointments of Juan Lorenzo de Navascués Benlloch and Fernando Ortega Izquierdo as new directors. This movement, which combines the departure of historical executives with the entry of profiles aligned with the industrial strategy of the Galician group, certifies the definitive transition of Unión Martín’s traditional ownership model towards an industrial integration under the operational umbrella of the multinational from Vigo.
The commitment to industrialization in the archipelago
The strategic thesis that justifies this purchase transcends the mere increase in market share. Profand, which exceeded 1.1 billion euros in revenue in the 2025 fiscal year, aims with this maneuver for greater penetration in the Canary market and an optimization of its supply channels in the strategic area FAO34, where Unión Martín maintained a consolidated leadership position in the capture and marketing of octopus, squid, and flat fish.
For Enrique García Chillón, the incorporation of Unión Martín responds to an industrial consolidation objective that should enable greater efficiency throughout the value chain. With this absorption, the group not only adds sales volume that last year was around 147 million euros but also strengthens its presence in the category of modern refrigerated fishmongers. The direct control over sources of origin and the processing capacity on the islands transform the new structure into the executing arm of Profand’s expansion plans in African and transatlantic markets, consolidating a mechanism where logistics, capture, and industrial added value coexist under a unified direction that no longer recognizes borders between Galician docks and the infrastructures of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
