JSV (Nazca) marks a milestone in Spanish maritime logistics with the presentation and commissioning at the port of Alicante of its first container ship in private ownership, the MilaGreen.
Owned by Nazca, the Spanish logistics and transport operator said the vessel is a ‘latest-generation’ ship in terms of environmental performance, representing a qualitative leap for the company, which until now had been serving the islands using long-term charter ships.
The acquisition of the vessel involved an investment of €38 million. The deal was agreed with specialist shipowner Jüngerhans Maritime Services and brokered by Arkona Allied Container. After completion of construction at shipyards in Shanghai, the ship has been integrated into the Canarias Exprés service, connecting the company’s own terminal at the Alicante port with the archipelago. JSV said the MilaGreen positions itself as ‘the most modern container ship’ on routes to the Canary Islands and much of the Mediterranean.
JSV’s director, Sonia Herzog, said the ship is the first of a three-vessel series of eco-friendly ships planned by the group. It will be joined at the end of 2026 by its twin, the MirandaGreen, and subsequently by the GreenCanarias. The vessel, named in honor of Milagros Sáenz de Samaniego—the founder’s wife, Antonio Herzog—begins operations carrying 450 containers of food provisions, non-perishable goods, construction materials and steel products from the Peninsula. Its fixed route includes stops at the port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after two and a half days of navigation, before continuing to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Lanzarote.
On the technological and sustainability front, the MilaGreen is designed to cut fuel consumption by half compared with the sector average. Built to use methanol once the supply infrastructure is operational, the ship features an optimized hydrodynamic hull, an intelligent real-time navigation system to calculate routes based on weather conditions, and technology enabling connection to the onshore power supply network (OPS) during berthing maneuvers, which eliminates emissions during loading and unloading.
