The governing body of the Las Palmas Port Authority marked a sweeping shift this Thursday in the management of its waters and port basins, taking over the direct provision of the maritime traffic regulation, coordination and management service previously operated by the Pilots Corporation. The technically and legally significant move entails the transfer of the seven female employees assigned to the service, guaranteeing the full stability and continuity of their employment contracts. To support this technological transition, the board awarded Hiades Business Patterns a contract to supply, implement and maintain an advanced Port Control platform for €499,495, supplemented by a €1.9 million investment to secure the data processing center over the next four years.
On strictly operational and environmental matters, the plenary session ratified the measures shaping the port’s industrial fabric, most notably the granting of a new MARPOL V license to Dresiduos Ecover for the management of waste and ship-generated refuse at the ports of Las Palmas, Salinetas and Arinaga.
The board also addressed a broad range of strategic initiatives across the eastern islands, approving an extension for the traditional fishing museum project at the Punta de Tostón Lighthouse, promoted by the Fuerteventura Island Council, as well as approving an agreement on photovoltaic lighting for the seafront promenade in Puerto del Rosario. In Lanzarote, meanwhile, the sale of the plots on Avenida de Naos in Arrecife was fully completed with the acquisitions by Sccatmeca and Gestiones Juranes.
In the area of energy transition and major investments, the extension of deadlines was formalized for ATH Bioenergy Macaronesia’s biodigestion plant in Arinaga. At the same time, Moeve Terminals Canarias withdrew its previous applications as proceedings began to extend the deadlines for its fuel and lubricant storage facilities, while Nueva Pescanova did the same with its planned offshore octopus farm on port-owned public land. In terms of good practices, the agreement on fee discounts with Hidramar was renewed, reaffirming that the Atlantic port’s competitiveness goes hand in hand with environmental standards.
