The Ministry of Industry and Tourism has confirmed its financial support for the shipbuilding industry in the Canary Islands. During an institutional visit to the facilities of Astican (Laskadiris Group) at the Port of La Luz, the Minister of Industry, Jordi Hereu, accompanied by the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, formalized the deployment of state subsidies aimed at technological modernization and sustainability for the maritime company. The corporation has secured nearly 1.8 million euros in public funds through the mechanisms of the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE Naval) and complementary lines of industrial aid. The volume of capital injected by the central government seeks to secure the competitiveness of the Gran Canaria plant owned by Greek capital against competition from shipyards on the West African coast and port nodes in continental Europe. The allocated funds support the introduction of digitalization tools in the dry-docking processes, advanced management systems for heavy waste, and improvements in the energy efficiency of repair slips. The ministerial investments align with EU guidelines for maritime decarbonization, an essential operational requirement to retain maintenance contracts from major container transport firms, drilling vessels, and offshore platforms. The visit of the ministerial delegation to the docks in Las Palmas strengthens the position of the Canary Islands in the design of future industrial subsidy lines from the Government. The assessment by the technicians from the Ministry emphasizes the direct economic return of the grants awarded, reflected in the innovation applied to the hulls of vessels and in the stabilization of jobs in the metal sector. The state’s financial commitment to the PERTE Naval ensures the continuity of the technological conversion process at Astican, guaranteeing its ability to compete in a global market subject to constant geopolitical and regulatory tensions.
