Equatorial Guinea, April 1, 2026. At a time when global energy stability hangs by a thread, the Gulf of Guinea has just made a significant authoritative move. The American giant Chevron has formalized the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the gas monetization project at the Aseng field, a strategic move that not only secures the flow of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to global markets until 2035 but also activates a multimillion-dollar contract for the Luxembourg-based firm Subsea7, reports Reuters.

The operation, confirmed by Jim Swartz, the highest authority of Chevron for Nigeria and Central Africa, is the direct result of a solid fiscal agreement with the government of Malabo in September 2025. This agreement ensures competitive conditions in an environment where legal certainty is the most valuable asset for investors. The project is not an isolated piece: it is the engine that will allow Chevron to expand its operations into the transboundary Yoyo-Yolanda blocks and the new exploration areas EG-06 and EG-11, consolidating a gas hub that connects existing infrastructures with new underwater resources.

The technical execution of the project is under the control of Subsea7, whose global projects division has secured a contract valued between 150 and 300 million dollars. The engineering challenge is significant: the installation of a single well connection that will link the Aseng field with the Alen platform through 19 kilometers of rigid pipeline and 20 kilometers of umbilicals, operating at critical depths of up to 800 meters.

David Bertin, senior vice president of Subsea7, emphasized the importance of this milestone for a company that has been operating in the waters of Equatorial Guinea for nearly two decades. Although management and engineering will start immediately from the Paris office, operational support will be distributed among the technical teams in Lisbon and the local logistics base in the African country. Offshore activities are scheduled to begin during this 2026.

This announcement comes in a context of maximum tension in the energy markets, where traditional supplies are threatened by geopolitical conflicts. By securing LNG production at the Aseng field, Equatorial Guinea positions itself as a key player in the energy security of the Atlantic. Chevron’s ability to reactivate investments in its blocks in the West African Gas Belt sends a clear signal to the markets: African gas is not only a future reserve but an immediate operational reality to meet global demand for the next decade.
