AMURA and the technology consultancy Híades Business Patterns advance the deployment of the European project NELSON for the digitisation of maritime transport in the Port of Las Palmas alongside Puertos de Tenerife.
The initiative, funded through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), aims to optimise security, operational efficiency and sustainability through the exchange of real-time information between vessels and control centres on land. To publish this news, no commercial or advertising agreement has been established with the parties mentioned, in line with Canarymaritime’s commitment to its readers.
Work session to define the operational testing schedule
As part of this operational phase, the technical teams held a working session with the participation of the Canary subsidiary of Binheur ASA, Fred. Olsen Express, and Port Control of the Las Palmas Port Authority. The meeting, coordinated by Laura Libia Osorio Sánchez as project manager at Híades Business Patterns, was used to define the work timetable and the architecture of the operational trials.
Coordination begins next September
The schedule sets the start of effective on-the-ground coordination activities for next September. Work over the coming months will focus on validating technology prototypes, coordinating communication protocols among the parties involved, and executing test scenarios to evaluate critical data flows between sea and shore.
Intelligent, interoperable maritime corridor
The project seeks to create an intelligent interoperable maritime corridor with maritime traffic systems (VTS), enabling automated decision-making and risk management for port authorities, shipping agents and passenger operators. The technological integration is supported by developments such as the Spanish Maritime Data Space (EDME) to connect operations involving pilots, tugboats and shipping lines.
European consortium led by Fintraffic VTS
Alongside the Canary representation—which includes the operational involvement of the port authorities of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in addition to Fred. Olsen—the European NELSON consortium is led by the Finnish entity Fintraffic VTS. It also includes the participation of the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Finnish Meteorological Institute and Aalto University.
