The Port of Las Palmas has showcased the strength of its community ties during a significant event for the social fabric of the docks. With the backing of Astilleros Zamakona, La Luz Autoport Terminal, the logistics facility of Domingo Alonso Group in the Gran Canaria area, has hosted the formalization of the agreement that seals the second consecutive season of sponsorship by Volkswagen for the Portuarios Puertos de Las Palmas boat. The institutional meeting brought together key representatives from the port administration, the automotive business, the city’s council, and workers, consolidating a joint project that supports nautical sports traditions in the very heart of island industrial development.
This renewal of the socio-cultural alliance coincides with a phase of solid activity in the sector of heavy ship repairs within the Port of La Luz. In this segment, Astilleros Zamakona stands out as a specialized corporation that absorbs a significant portion of the technical maintenance and transformation freights of international ships that dock in the archipelago, operating concurrently as one of the major economic engines and non-liberalized employment providers that give historical meaning and impetus to the crew of the Portuarios.
A crew with six decades of history at the docks
The support from Volkswagen Canarias and Domingo Alonso Group strengthens a team with deep civil roots in the port, whose official journey began in 1967 with the construction of its first traditional Canarian sailing vessel. The signing of the sponsorship for the current 2026 season has included the participation of Oliver Alonso, president of Domingo Alonso Group; Alejandro Barrera, president of the Portuarios boat; Beatriz Calzada, president of the Port Authority; and Carla Campoamor, councilor and president of the Municipal Sports Institute.
The convergence of these figures highlights the symphony existing between terminal operators, non-liberalized labor, and the auxiliary industry of the port that demands industrial firms such as Astilleros Zamakona for the execution of their hull contracts and technical repairs of international fleets.
Technical capacity and community integration in the Atlantic
The success of facilities like those of Zamakona in La Luz lies in their high technical specialization to service fishing vessels and complex platforms in the offshore sector, complying with the regulatory standards of the European Union. The optimization of repair delivery times and the agility of port services allow the facility to attract contracts from foreign shipowners, maintaining an economic traction that directly supports the traditional sports and cultural entities in the coastal environment of the capital.
