A decade ago, the port of Las Palmas consolidated its position as a strategic node on the map of global maritime services. The inauguration of the joint maintenance center between Wärtsilä and Zamakona Yards, which took place in June 2016, was not just an infrastructure expansion. It represented the birth of a logistical architecture designed to capture maritime traffic connecting Europe, Africa, and America. Today, on the tenth anniversary of that alliance, the assessment transcends mere ship repair to become a case study on how technical specialization and geographical location can generate a lasting competitive advantage. The genesis of this service center responded to a clear operational need. The offshore market and the oil exploration sector demanded minimal response times. With Wärtsilä’s experience in the overhaul of complex machinery and Zamakona’s shipyard capacity, the infrastructure became a catalyst for foreign shipowners, who represent more than 80% of the port traffic in Las Palmas. The model allowed the integration of engine overhaul and hull repair capabilities within a single facility, drastically reducing ship downtime. The value of this alliance lies in the depth of the technical relationship. Before formalizing the center, both entities had already accumulated three decades of mechanical collaboration. That previous trust allowed the transition to an integrated service model —under the brand CCB Zamakona Offshore— to be smooth. While Wärtsilä provided expert knowledge about its own power equipment, Zamakona ensured the industrial strength and shipyard logistics necessary to service deep-draft vessels. This ‘one-stop shop’ approach was crucial to attracting operators who, prior to the alliance, had to fragment their maintenance across various European or African ports. Wärtsilä’s strategy for the region has been consistent with its global network: bringing specialized assistance where the customer deploys its fleet. In the case of the Canary Islands, this proximity is not only geographical but also technical. Shipowners operating on Atlantic routes find in this center an extension of the factory. The capability to perform complex maintenance in the Port of Las Palmas has established the infrastructure as an essential component of the maritime supply chain, providing operational stability in an area characterized by the volatility of extractive and exploratory operations. From Zamakona’s perspective, the agreement with Wärtsilä has served to safeguard the competitiveness of its shipyards against competition from other ports along the Atlantic axis. The ability to attract foreign fleets through a technically certified offering from major manufacturers is likely the most valuable asset of the company in the last decade. Álvaro Garaygordóbil, at the time of the launch, defined it precisely: the center is a magnet. The port’s reputation has grown alongside the alliance’s capability to resolve breakdowns and perform scheduled maintenance, transforming the facility into a technical reference base for the Mid-Atlantic. The success of these ten years offers valuable lessons for the nautical industry. In a sector where the human element and technical knowledge of engines are critical, specialization in maintenance throughout the vessel’s lifecycle has proven to be more profitable than mere construction. The alliance between a leading manufacturer and a shipyard with a track record has managed to navigate the cyclical fluctuations of the offshore sector, adapting to the technical demands of an increasingly sophisticated fleet. Looking to the future, the Las Palmas service center faces new challenges. The decarbonization of maritime transport and the energy transition will require new skills in the repair of equipment powered by alternative fuels. The accumulated experience of Wärtsilä and the consolidated infrastructure of Zamakona place this point in the island’s geography in a privileged position to lead the next decade of port services. What began as a specialized workshop has transformed into a pillar of the Canary industrial fabric, a point where the Atlantic is not only navigated but where the mechanical heart of the fleets that cross it is maintained. The alliance has proven that, in the port business, value resides precisely in the ability to be the technical center of gravity for the global customer.
