The logistics map of the Mid-Atlantic has undergone a significant reconfiguration this Wednesday with the latest move from Suardiaz Group. The giant shipping company and global operator has completed the acquisition of Transporte Multimodal Canario (TMC), an operation that not only involves a sum of assets but a strategic assault on the control of the supply chain for fresh products between the Peninsula and the archipelago.
Juan Riva’s maneuver, president of the group, aims to secure food supply at a time of particular economic sensitivity. By absorbing TMC, Suardiaz not only acquires trucks and routes but also gains technical knowledge of refrigerated cargo (industrial cold) both in full containers and consolidated cargo. This specialization is critical for the large distribution chains operating in the islands, which now rely on an integrated operator that controls everything from the ship to the warehouse.
The added value of this operation lies in vertical integration. Suardiaz was already operating as a shipowner with a weekly line between Barcelona and the Canary Islands, but the incorporation of TMC allows it to offer a seamless ‘door-to-door’ service. In an archipelago defined by its customs and tax peculiarities, having total control over product traceability, especially in the food sector, represents a competitive advantage over other freight forwarders that depend on third parties for road transport or specialized storage.
This acquisition confirms that the port is no longer just a stopover point, but the nerve center of a logistics network that extends to the supermarket shelf. With this purchase, Suardiaz Group positions itself as the reference partner for major distribution chains, ensuring that the flow of goods between the mainland and the islands is more agile in the face of any contingencies on traditional maritime routes. The consolidation of refrigerated transport under a single command is, ultimately, a step towards the logistical sovereignty of an archipelago that relies on what arrives by sea.
