The Popular Party (PP) candidate for Las Palmas City Council and the Canary Islands government’s education minister, Hipólito Suárez, has allocated €40,000 in funding for the Puerto de Las Palmas Foundation Half Marathon on May 21, 2026, according to an announcement published Tuesday in the BOC. The public grant is earmarked exclusively to cover the organizational costs of the “Las Palmas Ports Foundation Half Marathon.” It is not known whether the Puerto de Las Palmas Foundation will still exist in 2027, as the Port Authority of Las Palmas has told Puertos del Estado that it must either be privatized or shut down. Nor is it known whether this payment relates to last year’s edition.
In 2026, the event featured a 21-kilometer course officially certified by the Spanish Athletics Federation, ensuring the legal validity of the times recorded by runners. To ensure the race ran smoothly within the port facility without disrupting daily operations, the event had medical coverage from Hospital Perpetuo Socorro (a trustee of the Foundation) as its medical sponsor, as well as logistical support from the Port Police and staff from the Port Authority of Las Palmas.
The return of the competition has received strong backing from other local administrations. Carla Campoamor, the capital city’s sports councillor, described the event as a key boost to consolidating Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as a sports tourism destination during the European winter. Meanwhile, Aridany Romero, the island council’s sports minister and an employee on leave from Puertos de Palmas, highlighted in January 2026 the importance of restoring a circuit, guaranteeing the island administration’s cooperation so that the race becomes a permanent fixture on the regional calendar.
