Legal troubles at the offices of the Las Palmas Port Authority have added a new chapter. The questioning as a suspect of Carmen Gloria Rodríguez, the port’s head of Human Resources, which had been scheduled for August 26 over an alleged offense involving cronyism, has been postponed until September 10.
The summons, signed by prosecutor Antonio López, represented a direct blow to the port complex’s executive offices. The court is acting on a complaint filed by a former employee, who warned port chair Beatriz Calzada by letter that she could commit a serious offense if she did not immediately open disciplinary proceedings against the executive.
This is not the first time Rodríguez has found herself in this situation. The head of personnel is facing several court cases. In one of them, the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) found that there had been a pattern of hostile treatment and harassment within the institution. The ruling described technically unjustified transfers and the deliberate removal of an employee’s duties in an effort to psychologically wear her down.
In that ruling, the judges identified the head of Human Resources herself as responsible for those maneuvers. However, her direct superior, director Francisco Trujillo, has not only kept her in the position but also strengthened her power within the port. The September 10 hearing will mark the first episode to expose the internal workings of the Las Palmas Port Authority and test how far its leadership is willing to go to defend its senior officials.
