The public entity Puertos Canarios has unlocked the environmental management of its facilities after awarding the cleaning and waste collection service contract to the UTE Greenport Canarias. The agreement, which was finalized for a total amount of 7.3 million euros, guarantees the ordinary maintenance and waste removal both at the central administrative dependencies of the organization and at the network of general interest ports that depend on the region. The award puts an end to a period of operational vulnerability caused by the failure of a previous public tender which was completely deserted.
The corporation, attached to the Department of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands and operating commercially under the distinctive label of Ecopuertos Autonómicos de Canarias, has established an initial execution period of three years for the contract. The technical specifications allow for the possibility of activating annual extensions for a maximum of two additional years, which could extend the contractor’s commitment to five years.
The recurring annual cost allocated for the maintenance of these sanitation and port hygiene tasks has been set at 1.4 million euros, also excluding indirect island taxes. The administrative process to stabilize this essential service required the urgent reconfiguration of the entity’s budgets following the bidders’ snub in the initial award attempt.
The management of Puertos Canarios was forced to design a new contracting file that updated the estimated market value upward and relaxed the technical specifications. The second tender, officially published on March 26, 2026, attracted the interest of a single business alliance made up of the local companies Aceinsa Canarias S.A. and Ayagaures Medioambiente (Pérez Moreno), whose economic and operational offer received final approval from the analysts of the Contracting Table.
The signing of this contract links the sanitation services of the UTE to the digitalization and green infrastructure strategy promoted by the public entity. The waste removal tasks will be coordinated with the new sustainability objectives aimed at transforming the docks of the archipelago into low-emission nodes and eco-efficient facilities. With this award, the department stabilizes the safety and health conditions for the fishing, sports, and commercial fleets that use the regional port facilities, preventing bureaucracy from disrupting the daily operations of the island’s logistics platforms.
