The Intendancy of Las Palmas has resolved the tender for the removal, transportation, and management of critical waste at the Military Arsenal, a strategic contract that ensures health safety and regulatory compliance for both the land base and the naval vessels docked at the facility. The tender has been structured into three distinct blocks to cover the broad spectrum of waste generated by naval activities, from medical waste to oily discharges regulated by the international MARPOL convention.
The result of the simplified open procedure has consolidated shared management between the local business ecosystem and the large operators in the environmental sector. The determining factor in the award has been the combination of the economic offer with the accreditation of strict quality and environmental management standards (ISO 14001 and 9001), which are essential requirements to operate in a military facility that has its own waste management system.
The Canarian SME Waste and Environmental Management Entity (GEMECAN) has taken control of the first and third lots. In this way, the local company will be responsible for managing general hazardous waste and biohazard waste. This award ensures that the Arsenal has an agile response for the treatment of materials that require specific safety protocols due to their potential toxicity or biological risk.
Meanwhile, Sertego Environmental Services, a subsidiary of the Urbaser group, has been awarded the second lot, focused exclusively on the management of MARPOL type B and C waste. This service is vital for the operability of the Naval Force, as it handles the transportation and treatment of harmful liquid substances and cargo waste that vessels must discharge on land to prevent marine pollution.
With the formalization of these contracts, which have an execution period of eleven months, the Arsenal of Las Palmas ensures the continuity of its environmental logistics chain. The prior processing of the expenditure underscores the importance that Defense places on protecting the port environment of the Gran Canaria capital, keeping the military docks aligned with the highest international standards of sustainability and safety.
