The General Directorate of Coasts and Management of the Canary Maritime Space has initiated the public information period for the occupation concession of the public maritime-terrestrial domain of the project ‘Submarine Telecommunications Cable between the islands of La Palma and Tenerife’. This new infrastructure, promoted by Telefónica de España, will have its mooring point at Playa de El Socorro, in the Tenerife municipality of Los Realejos.
The announcement, published on February 17, 2026, opens a period of twenty working days for any interested party to consult the technical file and submit objections. This optical fiber link is a key piece to enhance the redundancy of communications between both islands, ensuring a more stable network with greater data capacity in an area of special coastal protection.
This administrative movement coincides with a peak activity period in the deployment of underwater infrastructures in the Canary Islands. Recently, the archipelago has achieved important milestones such as the completion of the electrical and data interconnection between Tenerife and La Gomera, a project that has been noteworthy for its technical complexity in reaching great depths in the channel separating both islands.
In addition, other strategic projects are underway to close the digital ring of the islands. Notable among them is the new Canalink branch towards the south of Fuerteventura, which has the backing of European funds, and plans to soon connect Tenerife with El Hierro. All these cables, together with Telefónica’s new direct link to La Palma, are part of a comprehensive plan to reduce the digital divide and ensure that all islands have the same security in their telecommunications.
