The amphibious assault ship ‘Galicia’ has cast off from the Rota base to venture into one of the most unstable regions for Spanish strategic interests. The Navy is deploying its naval muscle toward Nouakchott, Mauritania, in a mission that transcends mere patrolling, reports Vozpópuli. The objective is to convert the ship’s deck into a floating academy where local forces can absorb critical tactics in maritime security and coastal defense, essential to curb the instability descending from the Sahel toward the Atlantic.

The expedition is not traveling light. Aboard are specialists from the Naval Tercio, the Levante Tercio, and experts from the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy. This contingent has the mission of training Mauritanian military personnel in disciplines ranging from improvised explosive device disposal to urban combat and aerial surveillance against illegal fishing. This is a transfer of technical knowledge aimed at enabling local authorities to exercise effective control over waters where piracy and illicit trafficking threaten the commercial routes supplying Europe.

The Gulf of Guinea is today a Gordian knot for national security. The bulk of the energy supply reaching the peninsula transits through these coordinates, and key fishing fleets operate for the Spanish economy. The presence of the ‘Galicia’ seeks to stabilize an environment where organized crime and terrorism seek oxygen. The deployment also includes civic-military cooperation actions, projecting an image of medical assistance and infrastructure improvement that aims to win the ‘battle for minds’ in vulnerable coastal communities.

At 160 meters in length, the ‘Galicia’ is the chosen tool for this projection of calm yet determined strength. Its ability to operate as a command platform and its equipment for point defense make it the ideal asset to navigate a scenario of asymmetric threats. In the coming months, the Spanish crew will have to navigate between technical instruction and naval diplomacy, aware that the security of the Canary Islands and the Peninsula’s borders is being played out today at the docks of Mauritania and in the hot waters of West Africa.
