The feast of the Virgen del Carmen is set to regain its maximum splendor at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A total of 60 leisure, fishing and port service vessels have officially registered to form the maritime procession escorting the patroness of seafarers through the waters of the capital’s inner harbor. The event, coordinated by the Port Authority in collaboration with the city council, is the most important date on the archipelago’s calendar of naval traditions, blending popular devotion with recognition for the port and industrial community.
The day combines religious protocol with a maritime security deployment designed to ensure the procession proceeds as planned. Local crews and shipowners have finalized preparations for their vessels across the different marinas and berths in the capital to take part in a nautical parade that halts regular activity at the South Quay (Muelle Sur). The dispatch of the 60 boats underscores the involvement of the Chicharrero nautical sector in preserving its collective identity signs linked to the sea.
The overland route and the Cabildo ramp
Commemorative events begin at the Parroquia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de La Concepción, the epicenter of Santa Cruz’s historic quarter. The solemn mass at 18:00 will bring together representatives of fishing skippers’ brotherhoods (cofradías), stevedores, tugboat crews and civil and island authorities from Tenerife. After the liturgical service ends, the image of the Virgin will start its procession on foot toward the port facilities, accompanied by the Banda Municipal de Santa Cruz de Tenerife and under the custody of the Gran Gala escort of the Local Police (Policía Local).
The civil and religious procession will access the restricted area of the Tenerife port via the connection ramp located in front of the headquarters of the Cabildo de Tenerife. It is a strategic point that helps devotees transition from the urban area to the quay, allowing thousands of residents and visitors to position themselves along the coastline to follow the advance of the land-based procession before the image boards.
The VB Canarias tug and the tribute at sea
Upon its arrival at the Muelle Sur, the Port Police of Santa Cruz, wearing its gala uniform, will take custody of the image. The boarding will be carried out aboard the VB Canarias tug, one of the most powerful rescue and technical assistance vessels in the port fleet. This platform provides the stability and security needed to transport the figure of the Virgin and her entourage through the waters of the bay, where the registered ships will carry out escort maneuvers in a tight formation.
As the tug navigates within the harbor basin, the celebration’s most emotionally charged moment will take place. The tug will stop its engines to carry out the traditional launch of a flower wreath into the water. This symbolic act pays tribute to the sailors, fishermen, stevedores and port workers who lost their lives while performing their professional duties in the waters of the Atlantic, linking devotion with the collective mourning of the port families.
The return of the Correíllo La Palma and the closing fireworks
The music of the Unión Artística El Cabo and the voice of Chago Melián will welcome the procession at the boarding area of the Muelle Sur, where the historic steamship Correíllo La Palma—one of the jewels of the Canary Islands’ maritime heritage—will also join the flotilla as it returns for this commemoration.
After the crossing through the port area, the Virgin del Carmen will disembark on land to begin the return route to the La Concepción church. The image’s arrival at its home temple is scheduled for 22:00, coinciding with the lighting of a fireworks show that will illuminate the capital’s sky, closing a day that reaffirms Santa Cruz’s close relationship with its port as a historic, social and cultural engine for the island.
