Laskaridis moves into the ship buying and chartering market in the Canary Islands
The extraordinary general meeting of shareholders of Astilleros Canarios, the Gran Canaria-based subsidiary of the Laskadiris group, formerly the shipbuilding company of Bazán during the INI era, approved on June 5, 2026 a reform of its articles of association to formally incorporate the purchase, operation, construction and chartering of vessels within its main corporate purpose. The move aligns the company’s operating capabilities with the global commercial activity of its international parent, the Greek maritime conglomerate controlled by the Laskaridis family.
The resolution, endorsed by a 99.37% favorable vote of the share capital present at the meeting, represents the most significant expansion of the company’s commercial powers in the last decade. The formal agreement, signed on August 5 by Germán Carlos Suárez on behalf of the single managing entity Invencible Capital, has been made public through its filing in the Mercantile Registry of Las Palmas. In the local media, Suárez is referred to as president, even though he is the sole administrator.
The amendment to the third article of the bylaws legally enables the insular entity to intervene directly in the international shipping market, a niche traditionally dominated from Athens by the Greek shipowning structure. The change also includes the management of port terminals.
Until now, the shipyard’s operations at the port of Las Palmas were focused mainly on the repair, transformation and maintenance of vessels, offshore structures and metal constructions. The new wording introduces a range of financial and commercial competencies, including the design, commercialization, intermediation and chartering of any type of vessel, as well as the ability to arrange, establish, modify and accept security rights over maritime assets. With this change, the Canary Islands subsidiary moves beyond the technical scope of dry-docking to take on the ability to act as a shipowner, lessor or transaction agent in major corporate operations.
The Greek holding group manages, through brands, one of the world’s largest fleets of refrigerated ships (reefers) and bulk carriers (bulk carriers). By granting Astican the legal authority to acquire, operate, charter and finance vessels, the ownership provides the island affiliate with instrumental flexibility aimed at managing maritime assets directly from the archipelago, leveraging tax advantages. The company is no longer only a fleet repair and maintenance hub, but becomes an integrated node for nautical services and maritime asset management on the international shipping map.
