Coalición Canaria projects the consolidation of Beatriz Calzada as president of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, looking ahead to the new political cycle that will begin after the 2027 regional and local elections.

As it marks three years since her arrival at the top of the organization in August 2026, the leadership of the nationalist formation says it will not push for changes in the management of the logistics hub. Assessments from sources within the organization indicate that the lack of negative figures in cargo traffic statistics and the smooth day-to-day operations justify keeping the leader in charge of the institution.

Nationalist sources contacted this Monday by Canarymaritime said: ‘Calzada, surely, will continue to lead Puertos de Las Palmas; there are no reasons, no negative traffic data that would imply changes, but all of that depends on what the ballot boxes say; we have to be humble.’ The same sources added: ‘There are no reasons for changes. That she would be a candidate in Las Palmas is a rumour. If everything goes as expected, she will continue after the 2027 elections.’

The appointment of Calzada to lead the ports in the eastern province was formalized in the summer of 2023. Her appointment fell within the distribution of responsibilities stemming from the governability agreement signed in the Archipelago between Coalición Canaria and the People’s Party (Partido Popular). The regional accord coincided with the formation of the central government in Madrid, where the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) managed to secure a majority with parliamentary support from the Canary nationalists themselves.

Against the backdrop of continuity in the Las Palmas post, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority faces the possibility of a change at the top of its management leadership if its current president, Pedro Suárez, were to leave to head the People’s Party ticket for the San Cristóbal de La Laguna mayoral election.

Projection

Calzada’s executive projection within the port system runs in parallel with the strategic moves by Coalición Canaria in the Gran Canaria capital ahead of the 2027 election.

The island party leader, Francisco Candil, has maintained maximum caution when asked about a possible resignation by Calzada from the Port Authority to join the municipal list as a candidate. The party is assessing how to build an electoral agreement with the Primero Canarias platform (Prica) to form a broad coalition in the city. However, the talks have generated discomfort within the Las Palmas nationalist ranks due to the way Prica’s leadership has promoted Marcial Morales, the former president of the Fuerteventura Cabildo and a former member of the board of directors of the Gran Canaria port.

Prica

The process of political convergence in the island capital has the backing of the party’s regional leadership. Fernando Clavijo, president of the Government of the Canary Islands, has publicly confirmed that the final decision on the alliance with Primero Canarias is exclusively up to the organization’s internal bodies in Gran Canaria.

The debate over candidate line-ups aims to optimize the nationalist space’s presence in the capital city council without changing the command structure of the Port Authority.

The profile of Beatriz Calzada, sources at CC recall, ‘combines technical management within the port administration with a long track record in Coalición Canaria’s organizational structure.’ In the May 28, 2023 local elections, she secured second place on the electoral list for the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council alongside Francisco Candil. Her executive ties to the local organization date back a decade earlier, to 2016, when she was chosen to preside over the management body tasked with reorganizing the Gran Canaria capital’s committee.

The confirmation of her management at the port facility strengthens the weight of the nationalists in a key infrastructure for connectivity and foreign trade in the Canary Islands.

The entry CC expects to keep Calzada at the helm of the Port Authority of Las Palmas after the 2027 elections was first published on canarymaritime.com.
