The Board of Directors of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority has sealed a strategic agreement to strengthen the logistical capacity for waste management at its facilities. The public entity, under the presidency of Pedro Suárez, formalized on March 26 the concession of a key infrastructure to the company Tratamiento de Residuos Electrónicos de Canarias, S.L. (TRECAN).
The operation authorizes the occupation of a facility of 253.91 square meters located at Dock No. 1, in the area known as El Pulguero. The asset will be integrated into the supply chain of the port service for the reception of MARPOL waste, the international regulation designed to prevent marine pollution. This concession ensures the availability of a specialized logistics warehouse for the treatment of discharges and waste from ships, a high-demand activity in light of the tightening global environmental protocols.
The contract establishes a three-year timeframe, with operations set to commence on June 12, 2026, and expiration on July 9, 2029. The financial terms of the concession, adjusted to the Consolidated Text of the State Ports Law, include an annual occupancy fee of 6,123.79 euros and an activity fee of 502.63 euros. These amounts are subject to periodic updates as stipulated by Royal Legislative Decree 2/2011.
This concession reflects the effort of the port of Tenerife to professionalize the management of electronic waste and hazardous materials at the Atlantic node. With the incorporation of TRECAN, the Port Authority consolidates its auxiliary service offerings, aligning with the sustainability demands prevalent in modern maritime trade. The location in El Pulguero provides direct connectivity to major docking areas, optimizing response times for fleet operators.
