The supply chain across the Canary archipelago depends on close coordination between the maritime transport arteries and land distribution routes. In a context marked by territorial fragmentation, the modernisation of Correos’ public fleet—through the industrial fitting work carried out by the bodybuilder Igluvan on more than 100 Renault units—represents a direct operational boost for island logistics. The new adapted vans and chassis-cab units have begun to be deployed at key nodes across the islands, strengthening the link between port terminals and the end customer at a time of maximum demand for roll-on/roll-off cargo.
Island logistics in the Canaries has distinctive dynamics, with the ports of Luz and Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife acting as the main gateways for palletised freight and commercial parcel shipments. Once goods have been unloaded from ro-ro vessels connecting the archipelago with mainland Spain, turnaround speed at the quays is critical to prevent bottlenecks. The addition of these 19 chassis-cab units and 103 optimised vans makes it possible to shorten the time the materials spend in port storage areas, speeding up the daily flow toward intermediate logistics hubs and inter-island distribution networks.
The technical transformation developed by Igluvan directly addresses the mechanical and operational challenges imposed by the archipelago’s geography. Before the project was carried out, the industrial firm conducted an on-site analysis focused on the real operations of delivery personnel. As a result, the units include advanced lashing, securing and protection systems for large-volume carts, as well as high-resistance interior linings that prevent premature deterioration caused by environmental salinity and intensive wear in port areas. These improvements support safer and more efficient handling of cargo during direct transfer manoeuvres from customs logistics platforms to delivery vehicles.
Strengthening this rolling-stock infrastructure is particularly important in the management of e-commerce and express parcels. The increased payload capacity and the flexibility of the new Correos fleet ensure a continuous distribution flow both in the dense urban hubs of the Canary capitals and on interurban routes across the island periphery, where terrain and distances affect operating costs.
At the same time, the vehicle fleet update takes place ahead of the green transformation facing freight transport on the islands. In an island environment where decarbonisation of port access and the rollout of Low Emission Zones (ZBE) in major cities are shaping the regulatory agenda, the bodybuilding sector is seeking advanced solutions. Parallel projects focused on the development of isothermal and fully electric industrial vehicles are laying the groundwork for a gradual energy transition in the land-transport fleets operating in Canary ports.
The integration of these adapted vehicles strengthens a more resilient and human regional logistics chain. By aligning transport fitting work with the operational reality of the maritime terminals and the demands of urban distribution, Correos and Igluvan optimise the archipelago’s internal connectivity. This renewal underscores the strategic importance of having an efficient fleet to sustain the commercial momentum of the Canaries, ensuring that goods crossing the islands’ ports reach any point in the archipelago quickly, safely and continuously.
